Marble is denser and can be polished; its veining and smooth surface suit classic and luxurious interiors. Travertine, with its porous structure and warm beige tones, gives a softer, more natural effect. Because its texture reduces slipping underfoot, travertine is an advantage on wet floors and outdoors.
Both stones are damaged by acidic cleaners; lemon, vinegar and limescale removers dull the surface. A neutral pH cleaner and an impregnating sealer once a year keep the surface looking as it did on the first day.
