Island (Central) Fireplace Models

An island fireplace stands in the middle of the space rather than against a wall, showing the flame from every direction.

In large living rooms, hotel lobbies and open-plan spaces it creates a powerful focal point.

Planning an island fireplace

The critical issue is the flue: because it rises vertically through the ceiling, the ceiling structure and the floor above must suit. For that reason the decision should ideally be taken during construction or a major refurbishment.

Types

  • Suspended model — Hung from the ceiling with no contact with the floor; light and modern.
  • Floor-standing model — Sits on a stone or metal base, giving greater heat mass.
  • Rotating model — The body turns on its axis so the flame can face any direction.

Frequently Asked Questions

What ceiling height does an island fireplace need?
A minimum of 2.7–3 metres is recommended so the flue draws properly and the proportions work. Below that the flue is too short and smoke problems begin.
Can one be added to my existing home?
If a flue can be taken through the ceiling, yes. Wet rooms or structural beams on the floor above may change the route; this is settled during the survey.
